A press conference regarding amendments relating to the Electoral Roll was held at the conference hall of the Chief Electoral Office, Baluwakhani.

Shri D Anandan(IAS), Chief Electoral Officer(CEO) Sikkim, chaired the meeting. Also present were Shri Zangpo Gyaltsen, Deputy Chief, Chief Electoral Office, IT Officers and the Chief Election Office staff.

As per the recommendation of the Election Commission of India and under the direction of the Ministry of Law and Justice, the Representation of People’s Act 1950 and Representation of People’s Act 1951 vide the Election Laws (Amendment) Act 2021 dated 30th December 2021 has come into effect from 1st August 2022.

Shri D. Anandan, CEO Sikkim, briefed about the Amendment Act 2021, dated 30th December 2021, which has brought the following changes into effect starting from 1st August 2022:

1. Simplifications of Forms

2. Four qualifying dates

1st January

1st April

1st July

1st October

3. Linking of Aadhar with Voter Card (EPIC)

The concept of this significant voluntary change is to curtail those wrongfully included as voters and those enrolled in more than two constituencies.

Shri D. Anandan said that the department has started its calendar events such as training of all the six districts Block Level Officers(BLOs), Electoral Registration Officers(EROs), and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers(AREOs), regarding the concept, legal provisions and the IT process, involved. Further, he added about different awareness-building camps to be conducted throughout the State till 31st August.

The purpose of the change in the Amendment is to help the young voters to enroll their names in the Electoral Roll immediately after reaching 18 years.

Shri D. Anandan, Chief Electoral Officer, urged all to step forward voluntarily to link their respective Aadhar Card details with their Voter Card.
