National Voters� Day (NVD) is one of the biggest annual events from the perspective of implementing SVEEP programme in the country. This year, it was poised between two landmark activities namely, Summary Revision of Electoral Rolls, 2014 and the conduct of elections on the other slated to be held in 2014. Accordingly, NVD programme for the year 2014 provides an opportunity to consolidate the learnings of the Summary Revision and yet to look forward to take appropriate measures to enhance democratic participation in the ensuing Parliament Elections. In terms of instructions issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI) for celebration of the National Voters� DAY, 2014, the State Action Plan for National Voters� Day (NVD) was prepared and the districts accordingly followed suit.-

The Election Commission of India through the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) initiative had tried all possible measures to ensure that all eligible voters exercise their electoral rights during the Lok Sabha Elections, 2014. During this election, in Tamil Nadu we were able to achieve a voter turnout of 73.74% which is marginally higher than the voting turnout during the previous parliamentary elections in 2009, which was 73.05 %.-

Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) has evolved into the flagship programme of the Election Commission of India. Since its inception in late 2009, SVEEP in Phase I covered 17 General Elections to State Assemblies and three revisions of the Electoral Roll, in its Phase-II, SVEEP focussed on Lok Sabha Election 2014 and the Assembly Elections to 15 States and Union Territories besides two revision of The Commission directed that the next phase of the SVEEP programme should reflect the learnings of the past six years of Indian experience and also include, after due study, best practices from across the globe and a project document be brought out clearly formulating SVEEP-III. International Seminar on ‘Strategies for Empowering Young and Future Voters’ was organized by the Election Commission of India on 24th January, 2017 in collaboration with UNDP as a part of the National Voter’s Day Celebrations. The Chief Election Commissioner of India graced the occasion as the Chief Guest with august participation by Election Commissioners of India, Excellencies the Heads of Election Management Bodies, Commissioners, Members from different EMB’s of the world, Heads of International Organizations or their Representatives, Senior Functionaries of VoICE.NET, VoICE International besides the other senior officials of the Election Commission of India. The Participating EMB’s and the International Organizations presented Papers on the theme of the Seminar. The Seminar was marked by signing of MOU’s of cooperation with the EMB’s of Australia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Fiji and Nepal besides Inaugural Launch of the VoICE International, the quarterly e Magazine on VoICE.NET Platform.
